Manuscript Assessment

What

A manuscript assessment is the perfect way to have an unbiased professional analyse your book and let you know what works, what doesn’t, and what you can do to fix it.

While performing a manuscript assessment, the editor forgoes making edits directly in the text. Instead, they read through the manuscript and take copious notes. These notes are turned into a concise, detailed, and actionable report. The report focuses on plot (pace and tension, inconsistencies, unmet reader promises … ), character development (believability, growth, empathy … ), and all the big-picture stuff (point of view, tense, outline… ).

Why

It’s the perfect starting point if you’re not quite ready to book a full-scale edit. Plus, it’s quicker. Where a developmental edit involves writing hundreds (and hundreds!) of comments directly into the manuscript, as well as a report, an assessment produces a report only.

It’s great for when you’re not entirely sure what type of edit your book needs, as the assessment will make that clear.
